Tutorial?

Post by Droodie » Sun Mar 21, 2004 9:48 am

Alright, is there anywhere any kind of MQ tutorial for us that are not hard core programmers or hacking wizkids? I have read the MQ manual several times but it doesnt help me. I have no knowledge of C++ programming or similar to fall back on.

(Did you know for example the manual doesnt state explicity just HOW you /echo the value of a variable? Nowhere does it say "in order to print the value of the variable called "test", you have to put an @-sign infront of the variable name." This might be obvious or self-explanatory to a good ol' hacker but for us that are noobs and just try to learn it is not. The above scenario took me 20 minutes to figure out, purely through trial and error - many many errors)

Anyway, I did a quick search on google on "macroquest tutorial" but it yielded nothing of interest. If there are no tutorials, is there any plans for such in the future?

If there was a tutorial I might not have this big RTFM stick. That would be bad. So, no tutorial. RTFM stick stays!

If there was a tutorial then some of the people on this board would not have as much of an opportunity to put other people down.

So no tutorial.

So Ute. You answer all the newbie questions before anyone can put them down. Let's see how long you last.

If you have no programming knowledge, this probably isn't the best place to learn. Read some tutorials for other languages, then start looking for similarities in different macros and work your way up from there.

I hate to say it, but the barrier to becoming an entry level user of MQ is intentional. It may sound like elitist tripe, but I believe the rationale is this: as long as MQ remains difficult if not impossible for the average EQ player to utilize, MQ as a project and a tool has a life. This being an open source project, Sony can and I am sure does, monitor it's progress. I am also sure they have some sort of metric worked out to make guesstimates on the penetration of MQ and other EQ-enhancing tools into the EQ userbase. If ever this metric leads Sony to believe it is losing money it will act.

Now, having said all that, I must admit I may just be speaking right out of my ass, but hey, its the impression I've picked up on. If what I have said seems plausible, ask yourself this question: if you were running a similar project and knew for a fact that Sony was watching, would it not behoove you to "cull the herd" ?

Okay, so now maybe you "get it" and maybe you do not. My best advice is to find someone you trust, preferrably a real life in-the-flesh friend, that knows about and how to make use of MQ and have that person teach you the basics.

P.S. Yes, that pun was intentional 8) MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I guess I don't understand how a tool like MQ could ever cause Sony to lose money. If anything it causes them to make money because if tomorrow MQ went away forever, the day after tomorrow would be the day I cancel my EQ accounts. I'm sure many others feel the same way.

Hell right now with EQW broken I don't want to play. Tools like EQW and MQ that provide a service that should be built into the tool make people want to play, they don't cost Sony any money. They keep the 12.95/month (times 4 accounts for me) rolling in.

I tend to agree, but I am not an SOE suit. The implication of my phrasing that you quoted is that currently Sony shows little to no outward signs of perceiving MQ to be a threat to it's bottom line. But if Sony ever does perceive MQ to be a threat it will move on multiple fronts to eliminate it.

Exactly. This is why my wife and I both use MQ: it enhances our playtime experiences by doing things (in the client) that we feel any good MMORPG of EverQuest's calibre should do. Without MQ we don't enjoy our time on Norrath, on Luclin, or in the Planes nearly as much.

Tools like MQ2 and SEQ etc *can* give players an advantage over players that do not have these tools causing the have-not players to quit in disgust.

That is why it is important for us *haves* to play nice.
