Ok I read the help files and I still dont get it

Post by MMB » Fri Oct 31, 2003 7:52 pm

A good friend sent me a compiled windows zip of MQ a few months back, i unzipped it, clicked the .exe and wow! game became more fun.

Then a big patch hit

no more MQ and my friend no longer plays.

Soooo I though I'd come here and figure out how to compile it (correct terminology?( myself, I'm very IT literate (its my job) but not at a code level however i reckoned there would be some easy to follow guides and it wouldnt be too hard.

I was wrong.

I've just spent 4 hours here going through various documentation and besides the fact I dont have C++, Visual studio version X, Microsoft .Net, Detour or any of the many applications I apparently need (the last time I compiled a prog it was Basic and you coed it and hit the compile button, end of story, thats 18 years ago...) I am just totally lost.

When I say i am lost i understand that there are source files...somewhere ( yes i can see the url and ues i can DL the zip but they are in..multiple formats...?) and i know I have to compile/make or whatever these various diff source files but I will be honest with you, my head is simply melting down here. I also saw the apparently simple quick guide to running MQ but again, I am afraid I dont have the neccesary software or knowhow.

What i would like to know, is if anyone out there is selling precompiled versions of this (and offering support by way of updates come patch time) so that I can give someone my money and get the fun macro ability back.

I dont mind donating to a group of the devs, the head honcho, an individual or whoever, I just want a file I can unzip that contains a working compiled windosws XP compatible version.

Before anyone flames me, remember two things, first I am more than willing to pay and secondly I have neither the software to do this myself or, and more importantly the technical knowledge (and no I am afraid I dont have time to learn the skillset you guys already know).

Any help pointers on a solution warmly welcomed.

Try taking a look at the readme.html file in the release folder.

However, it is legal to charge for your time/expertise in compiling and distributing an executable of MQ.

and besides the fact I dont have C++, Visual studio version X, Microsoft .Net, Detour or any of the many applications I apparently need
Nothing here will help you unless you get a copy of Visual C++ or Visual Studio .NET. For all practical purposes, one of these is REQUIRED to compile MacroQuest. So, there is no use asking any more questions or reading any more on these boards until you get your hands on one of these.

Its legal to charge a fair price. and for hitting a few compile buttons.
Lets say my time is worth 20 an hour = 33cents a min takes me about 2 mins to compile a version of MQ woot 66cents coming my way
But seriously don't mean to derail fromt he point here jsut thought i'd add in the fair price part.

if you are willing to "pay" cough up the 85$ for visual studio net and then follow my quick step guide... I bet you can even find vc6++ for less than 85$ if you do a search on google or something... maybe take a c class? cost you like 20-30 dollars for the sign in fee then attend one class and take the cd with vc home...

How much does the vc++ for dunmmies cost? I think it comes with a version of vc that can compile mq...

EqMule00 first let me say I HIGHLY respect your posts here and appreciate them beyond telling. I must however point out that your quick guide to getting started is somewhat dated and not applicable to people using visual studio.net. Might I suggest linking to the Readme.html in the zip? I found that to be very easy to follow.

Please don’t take this as flame or a slight it’s meant to be a helpful suggestion from the village idiot :P

yeah ill look into that, I wrote that step by step long before we had an updated readme.html, and since im the one that actually cvs the readme.html, i figure I should fix the step by step for .net ppl as well, we will see when time permits. No offense taken. You are making a good point. (however for ppl using vc6 my article IS excellent)

For the .NET people.

1) Open the folder where you downloaded the source.
2) Double click the .sln file.
3) Click Build --> Build Solution
4) Enjoy

Dunno about you, but where I come from, people bill you per hour, not per minute =P

Heya McKorr, does that only build the release?

I think (maybe wrong) I tried that once and it builts everything, when I only want the release version of the dll and exe.

If what you say works I think it is easier and I will modify the documentation.

Click Build --> Configuration. Select release, uncheck the block for mqectps or whatever it is... just leave the blocks for eqlib and the exe checked. Close that, click Build --> Solution. Usually when it comes out of the CVS it is set to Debug configuration with only the DLL checked, since the exe changes so seldom.

OK, then what I put in the readme is appropriate.

I was going to change it to your directions, but will just leave it as is.

In general, unless you see a post about a major change to the exe file, you only need to compile a new dll.
