boxing woes since OOW

Post by Undies » Sun Sep 26, 2004 9:53 pm

Not really associated with Macroquest, just posting here since many seem to know their stuff a lot better than most!

I box 2 characters on 1 machine (Athlon 1700 Geforce Ti 4200 128M)

I've been having awful problems since OOW.
The major one was unplayable lag in all the new OOW zones.
I recently fixed this by setting graphics aperture = 256M in the BIOS. (as suggested by Lax in his WINEQ forum).

A secondary one is missing terrain in some zones (which is also associated with unplayable lag). I think this was also fixed by the BIOS change.

Yet another weird one is change of playing speed (usually slower). It makes my characters run at about half speed (or twice!). Makes outrunning mobs impossible, attacks are slower/faster, buffs are longer/shorter etc. very strange... I dont think this was fixed by AGP aperture.

Has anyone noticed this? I'm not sure what it is associated with eg. boxing, SOE, Geforce or MQ2... Difficult to pin down as it only happens rarely.

it's OoW, as soe releases more expansions the game uses lots more of memory. How much RAM do you have?

Loading OoW with the very basic settings uses like 230 mb of memory in my computer, and all i have is 384, that makes 2boxing almost impossible. With this same system I could 2box for raids during PoP in my computer perfectly fine.

I have 1 gb of ram and an almost identical system to the poster in the first post. Its almost unplayable when playing two characters, Yet it used to be super smooth.

I can play 2 toons in OoW... but, i'm down to 10fps on the top layer toon.

1gig DDR 2700, AMD 2400+

I can bot 4 toons in ferubi, and stay at 20 fps. and bot 4 toons in poe and get 30fps and smooth as silk. Methinks the added particles in WoS just lags everything down (even with them turned off in settings)

sorry I should have mentioned I have 1.5GB RAM and have most settings at simple or off.

EDIT: It is not just simple lag... the clock actually seems to change the rate it works at.

eg. I cast group buffs on myself and somebody else but they wear off at substantially different times (eg 20 min diff). Very weird.

Also very rarely everything runs at super fast speed. Tag a mob then head back to camp... both mob and toon run at something like 2x selos speed.

guys you didnt read the patch message =P there are a lot of things in eq now that eat up VIDEO memory =( now its time to mess with those settings or get better video cards.... im on a 128MB video card and i experience dissapearing terrain too, when i swapped in a 256 video card it helped a LOT but there was still a bit more lag than if i were boxxing in say HoH
You have gotten better at Carpal Tunnel! (247)

im having disappearing textures, sometimes with only 2 accts (pofire, potranq, other such zones if ive been logged in for a while). often ill get really bad video lag on one window.

Running:
p4 3.0e
2Gb RAM
ATI X800XT 256MB video card
10k SATA raptor

i suppose no one is exempt from these issues. i saw a post where an EQ dev stated that the issue is not necessarily just from video memory intensive zones alone, but that video memory is not being released properly after it is used in these zones. this is only really an issue with large outdoor zones in Luclin and later expansions. i think the EQ devs are working on this, but people 2-3 boxing definitely takes the back burner with them.

Funny, I was just talking about this in another forum area...
Let's not forget to mention that when loading OoW zones, the client has a huge memory leak. When two boxing, I'd have to relog/reboot after 8-9 zones because my framerates would drop to absolute crap - even with 1gb of ram and swapfile active. It isn't as noticeable when only playing one account, but you will notice your commit charge slowly creep upward, especially when zoning.
I haven't had the disappearing textures problem at least.

load a third acct ;/

i can get 2 to OoW without losing textures, but i do lose the framerate. if i load another char up in like nexus or any other random small zone, i still lose textures on it. only zone outside PoP, GoD, OoW ive had problems is ME. really hoping this gets fixed. gonna have to go back to using a second pc to box ;(

Had the same problems as you all when OoW first came out. I submitted stuff to Lax on WinEQ he helped alot. this is what I did, and can now run 4 on my computer again

AMD 2500+ Barton core - ~2000
Nvidia Abit 5900XT - 128
1 gig of Ram
MSI - K7n2

first off I used the
Driver Cleaner 3

http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/

and cleaned out the nvidia drivers, RTFM on it, you have to do it exactly.

Second I uninstalled Wineq and re downloaded it and did a fresh install.

Also went into my bios and set the agp app up to 256. I had forgot that I had flashed the bios and it had reset everything back to default :(

Lastly i was using two different directories, but went to only one.

After that I got 4 instances running on my computer WITH all luclin models on. Now I am not saying I didn't lag like hell at time in the PoK but it worked.

Hope this helps

you shouldnt need to mess with lending RAM to AGP to box if you have a high end card. that fix is merely a look over the issue. also, some people have crashes from adjusting that setting!

System:

AMD XP 3200+ (barton core)
1.5GB of Corsair Low-Latency PC3500 RAM
BFG GeForce 6800GT (oc) with 256Mb fast DDR Vram
80Gb Serial ATA 7200rpm Hdd.

I CANNOT play 2 characters with No models on in OoW.

I am going to try the Driver cleaner method. I can't even move in most OoO zones, because I get 0/50fps.

Someone on Graffe's suggested adding HardwareTnL=TRUE under the [Defaults] section of the eqclient.ini helps OoW lag. I haven't tried it personally since I don't get any lag on my system.

Do you all have pixel shaders unchcked? 1x were turned on by default, I experienced greatly increased performance when I flipped them off.

It's on the advanced menu, might have to revert to default UI depending on your skin.
