Off topic sorta (question about the macroquest coding lang.)

Not even sure you call it a language, but if i were to have the option to take a course in college (which im attending shortly) what exactly would be the best course to take to more understand everything about the source that you guys are trying to repair. I'd like to be able to contribute in some way and although i really dont know anything about it, i am really interested in it.

So anyway, just wanted to know where most of the dev's learned their knowledge of how to work this code :)

Any info is helpful thanks!

maybe a CS class. MQ is written mostly in C++, and I think you'll take a C++ course for CS

I've taken assembly (got a B but don't remember much), Pascal, C, and java and I can tell you that to just make the scripts you only need a basic knowledge of coding and some practice. Most good computer language classes arn't really just add on to your schedule classes...meaning the work load should be considerable.

I have heard that you can write macros in Perl for MQ but I have yet to see an example. I know at my college you can take Perl.

If you really want to help on any site like macroquest, hackersquest, or any major site that has coders learn assembly there always seems to be a shortage, if you understand it you understand the memory so I hear, and anything that you can do in another language you can do in assembly (it may take more code but you will do it a lot more efficiently).

Hopefully though one of the actual devs of the site will answer your Q as I am just a MQ newbie like you.

Learned my knowledge out of a couple C/C++ books, and from working in the code after getting a basic knowledge of it... oh, MSDN Library is also a good source of info library functions...

Yeah, basically you need to know atleast one script langauge, be it visual basics, java, c , c++ just to get the grip on what the code does, and then you just sorta go from there. I learned vb threw school and got to understanding it faster..

Hmm, i think you pretty much covered it! (my Question). But as for a couple questions regarding your answers, when i ask what language the MQ is in, i dont mean what language the SCRIPTING is in, i mean which language the actual program is written in...C+ makes sense, im a knob and wrote that really late last night, and actually knew that because I originally was using C++ to compile it and stuff.

Umm, but yah, my friend is in CS in University so has all the books and proggies, if all it takes is reading hte course book and following what it says, im definitely willing to do it.

MQ has by far given me the most reason to pursue programming (was originally just going to follow through with IST Networking) but i always wanted to program (dropped outta c++ in HS *was a univ entrance course*) but only because it wasnt graphical and there was no visible progress with that crappy command line shiz

but anyway..thanks again for the replies, and to consillium (sp) i am essentially a newb because i've forgotten everything about mQ..

Was gone for months because of a car accident i was in, had head trauma and a lot of memory loss, hence hte reason i been asking so many obvious newb questions again..bits and pieces of my memory are laying on the highway somewhere i think

I am sorry to hear about the head trauma Draekz. Nothing like trying to code to help the brain get strong again...sure beats a cross-word puzzle.

Ahm, I think MQ is written mostly with regular old C, but it is spiced up quite a bit with C++ and assembly in a few spots... but C and C++ can almost go hand in hand in terms of college classes, they tend to give a good grip on the meanings of the language syntax, and don't heavilly hit on the actual keywords used in that language. Hence, any college language class would really help a lot. But you will never get as much experience in coding in a classroom as you can at home. Remember, the best experience is hands on, not from a book.
