Question for Devs:

Post by BlueSkies » Sat Jun 07, 2003 1:12 pm

Hey guys. I've been following the MacroQuest project for a very, very long time. It continues to amaze me, and now the way developers have come together to further the project... It's awesome, guys.

I am what I consider myself to be a "decent" visual basic (censor: i'm an idiot; please ignore me) programmer, but I have next to no experience with C++. I would very, very much like to get in on this project. I just don't know what I'm looking at... Now, I can figure out some of this, but, on the whole, I'm hopelessly lost.

I feel I could be an asset to MacroQuest development, if I just knew where to get started. Any pointers?

[edit] Btw: I should note that I'm using Visual Studio .NET, and that I have gotten MQ to compile, from the current CVS.

Figure out the sequence of events that happens when you type /who.

Once you have done that, you will know how MQ works.

Your question is just too ethereal to answer any better I'm afraid...actually, I thought DKAA's answer was amazingly brilliant.

Perhaps you could ask some more specific questions. However, if you don't know C++ at *all*. ..then it's going to be very difficult to explain things. However, if you have a good grasp of C++, then we should be able to answer fairly direct questions.

any experience with assembly? I could use some help digging through disassembled code and finding the click function ;)

No asm experience, no... And as for C++ experience -- I'm familiar with object oriented programming languages, and I am capable to reading C++ and figuring out 'sorta' what it does... Found where the system inserts the new commands into EQ -- so I played around with that a little.

I dunno, I kinda had some lofty goal to learn C++ programming by jumping into the deep end -- MacroQuest being about as complex a C++ program as I can get my hands on, well... :) Plus my interest in the project (and in EQ in general) is pretty extensive, so... :)

Valerian,

I already found the click function. See my /clickalicious info post. That just find what function modifies those offsets and you will find /click.

believe I've looked at that function, debugged it, disassembled it, combed through it, and haven't found a way to call it or if in fact it is the click function we need.
