frequent LDs when zoning

Post by Stilgar » Wed Mar 24, 2004 4:20 pm

Greetings all...the topic says it all...

When using MQ I lose the connection when I zone, happens roughly ever 3-4th zoning...without MQ I can zone for 20-30 zones without problem...is it just bad luck or something else?

All other MQ functions work without any problems, can't really think of the source of that problem, since all offsets seem to be right....

Clean off the viruses and spyware.
Buy more RAM.
Get a faster net connection.

If that doesn't fix it, time for a new PC.

Which part of "without MQ I can zone for 20-30 zones without problem" did you not understand?
Maybe it's just coincidence, or with the latest patch from the SOE side the connection isn't as stable anymore or maybe some cosmic death ray is messing with my connection - I don't know. Hence my post.

Since "You have to be this tall to ride" (quote from a developer about the knowledge needed to run MQ) you can rest assured it's NOT spyware, nor lack of Ram or bandwidth.

it might be a problem with a corrupeted eqclient or one of the other ini's. make a copy of it. repatch and copy over your settings from the old eqclient. only the settings you cant live without or too lazy to reconfig at the optinos window . you dont wana recopy over all the lines of settings or you will instill back in the bad stuff.

try turning off your antispyware, it may see port access done by eq as malacious and prevents access

if you have a modem or a router get the lastest firmware for it. programers have their arms twisted behind their back to push the product out the door asap. firmware updates are there to put in stuff forgoten.

if if you have a router make sure its setup to work with everquest, port triggering and all that crap. see first url for details exampe "LD when zoning" "setting up linksys router to work with everquest"

Sigh

Don't you guys know? you're not supposed to run MQ on wednesdays, its just not gunna work on wednesdays.

Also, turn off all florescent lights in your house, the reflection of light against the computer screen could cause a jam in your computer, the 1's and 0's wont move, and the next thing you know, the whole computer is constipated!

Dont forget to make sure your cat isnt around, macro's and cat's dont get along.

Stilgar,

In a serious answer to your question, Yes, MQ is crashing on zone about every 2-8 zonings, randomly. Its happened on one of my computers more then the others, this started happening right after the March 16th patch.

Of the 3 other friends I communicate with regularly who also use MQ, they also crash as often as my main computer does.

Speculation as to why: About a year ago, MQ used to do this. The result was they suspended all MQ activity during zoning. This worked for the most part. When Lax came onto the project, this seemed like one of the first things that got fixed and the long delay after zoning was gone. Since it has creeped back in, its a safe bet that the monitoring of zoning is borked and that MQ is writing to memory space that's not ready to accept the detours, hence the unlucky random crash, but only if some activity happens while zoning. (this is just a guess)

The next step of course is to have a bunch of us load up our debuggers on our client machines to try to capture the crash and post the dump.

Thanks Micro :) I was vaguely thinking that restricted memory was being used, but didn't know all the background...only been a user since 6 months =)
