This is a tragic event. HL2 is now being delayed 4 months because of this. It's one thing to hack it after the fact. It's totally another to sabotage it.

That's what I consider this...

Just think of how much money Valve is going to lose because they no longer have a secret proprietary engine that they can sell. Think of how much money it's going to cost to recode the game just so they can try to prevent hacking even further.

Honestly I don't care. They're rich enough as it is and the gameing companies make too much money anyway. Yea, so the exeuctives will make $100k this year instead of $200k. Big whoopie ...the devs that did the work are paid no matter what. (hell, this will probably give them MORE work/money)

I don't want the source to hack Half Life 2 .....I want it for reference for other things ..lol.

No, tragic is when a maniacal world leader invades your country because he feels like it. This is simply what happens when you put source code on a network that has ANY pipeline to the outside world (which BOGGLES the mind!! I'd not let that source anywhere CLOSE to a computer that had connections to the outside world!!!)

No, this is like the bank robberies of the past. A few people will feel the pain, but they had the money in the first place. Everyone else was poor anyway and won't give a shit :)

Interesting viewpoint.

Devs can't get paid if they loose their job. This is the type of thing that can cause companys to do layoffs or even go under. And if you think the "Execs" are the people who will take the hit first, I dobut that. Usualy they will get rid of others (lower than them) before lowering their own pay.

This is just my opinion having seen first hand what happens to the people with all the money, and what happens to the regular employees when money isn't coming in like usual. The big wigs are still there and living large. 200 devs on the other hand...
When they come to me, they're in trouble, or they want some. I bust people out of prison, hunt down vampires, fight alien gods -- All the fun jobs people are too squeamish or too polite to do themselves.

Call me a mercenary. Call me an assassin. Call me a villain. I am all that and more.

My name's John Gaunt, but out on the streets of Cynosure, I am called...

I must say that while I don't read the non EQ and dev forums much, this phrase simply amazes me:
Honestly I don't care. They're rich enough as it is and the gameing companies make too much money anyway.
That combined with this:
A few people will feel the pain, but they had the money in the first place. Everyone else was poor anyway and won't give a smurf poo
Leads me to believe that you have never had any dealings with how a company is run. I weep for any company you work for or, God help us all, anyone who works for you before you get wiser than you are.

Thank you GrimJack for what seems to be another in a long line of reasoned responses.
