MQ2 running, but not working in EQ

I made a Wiki page, not sure if it's right or not. Probably not.

I've used MQ2 in the past, but it was always compiled for me by someone else. I just came back to the game, and decided to install MQ2 again. I got it working last week before the July 9th update by following all the instructions in the manual and wiki instructions.

I have absolutely NO idea why it isn't working for me now, since the update. I've done everything exactly the same, and I can see MQ2 in my trey is running fine, but it isn't working in EQ.

I also used the search on the forums, to try and see if i could find someone else having the same problem. I found http://macroquest2.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4718 which is exactly the same problem I'm having.

The solution given in that thread is "Follow the directions again, and again, and again, until you get it right. It works."

I've followed the directions exactly as I should be about 50 times in the past 2 days, and I'm going insane. Any *specific* help would be very much appreciated.

You say that you can see MQ2 in the tray, but it isn't working in EQ. How exactly are you determining that MQ2 isn't working? What specifically are you doing to check that it is or isn't working?

Are you loading MQ2 after starting EQ, or before?

Are you running Vista or XP?

It's quite difficult for us to give you *specific* help if your only information is "I followed the instructions but it doesn't work". Vague requests for help will get you vague or snarky replies.

Anyway, without really knowing what you've done or not done, or what problems you're having, I can give you this advice. Reboot your computer (no I'm not kidding). Delete any MQ2 files (source or compiled) and then re-download the latest zip. Follow the instructions on the wiki to build just a vanilla MQ2 with no plugins or anything else. Then start MQ2 before starting EQ and check for a MQ2 window in game. Try typing just "/echo" to see if you get a response of any sort.

Sorry, i'll be a little more specific.

I'm loading MQ2 before I start EQ.

I know that MQ2 isn't working in EQ because when i do /echo or /doors i get no response, aswell I can't see the MQ2 chat window.

Using Windows Vista.

I have rebooted and redownloaded the zip file a billion times in my recent attempts to get MQ2 to work in game. Nothing seems to work.

I will try to build a Vanilla MQ2, and also my husband just got home and thinks that my compiling program may be the problem. So I'm going to try a few things here, thank you for the response.

If you're using Vista, make sure that you're running MQ2 as administrator as well as EQ (change the shortcut). I had that problem when I first installed Vista and that fixed it for me.

Thank you Drzoon, MQ2 up and working on both my computer and my husband's.

Turns out the problem was our compiling program. I edited my wiki page, sorry for the inconvenience!

We were using Visual C++ 2008 express edition. It compiled everything and it *seemed* to work ok. But I completely missed this little piece of information on the wiki site:

"The only supported compilers are VC6++ (Visual C++ 6.0) and VC.net (Visual C++ .NET 2003 or 2005), and support for VC6 is being phased out."

So, we followed all the instructions and got the 2005 express edition and it works now. So yeah. Sorry for even making this post. :)

I can confirm that Visual Studio 2008 Express DOES work straight off the site, no modifications necessary.

Completely new comp, no previous VS versions on it, downloaded, installed, and it worked just fine with MQ2.

See, now that's just weird. Maybe the compiler does work. I got it to work last week using 2008 straight off the site with no modifications. But for some reason it just didn't work for me after the July 9th update. *shrug*

I'm using 2005 with the mods and it's working fine now though, so I'm happy.

You mentioned doing /echo and the such and getting no response. You DIDN'T get a string about bad command blahblahblah?

It almost sounds like the MQ2 window wasn't opened, which generally means, the plugin that actually opens the window wasn't loaded. I sometimes use the MQ2Telnet plugin and not the Mq2Chat plugin.

If you're running Vista 64, and are getting the MQ2Auth0.h error, make sure that your shortcut to MQ2 does NOT have the "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP" checked. I know at least one person *cough* who screwed that up.

I'm using VC++ 2008 Express - I haven't yet built MQ2 for a 64-bit target, but plan to do that and check the results when I get a chance. (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/9yb4317s.aspx)
