EULA changes.

Post by Grey » Wed Feb 26, 2003 11:50 am

The accept and decline buttons changed place, so i compared with the old file and here's what they added:
"if you request any technical support, you consent to our remote accessing and review of the computer you load the Software onto"

I wonder of sending in a petition is tech support or not? *shrug* I would think that it's not, its more CS than TS. On the other hand if your crashing I would think that is TS. I guess it depends on what they view as tech support?

Actually the accept /decline buttons switch places randomly now. Nearly threw me off the first time it happened and almost hit decline where accept had always been.

But this thing about us consenting to allow them to look at the innards of our computer seems to me a breach of the Privacy Act. But then again I could be wrong in regards to the understanding of their wording "if you request any technical support, you consent to our remote accessing and review of the computer you load the Software onto" Suffice it to say this does not make me happy and George Orwell's "1984" comes to mind

You guys are silly. People are trusting their firewalls and routers to protect them from process scans and whatever coming from EQ.

They're not going to do it on a new port, or from a different, unapproved server (depending on how you have your firewall set up, permissions are granted to certain IP's). It's going to come from the port that it always comes from, and if you /petition or whatever in game, then it's going to come through just like any other traffic.

Unless you've got nutzo security on your 2k/NT box, you don't have file-only executable permissions set on ports accessed by EQ (meaning that the port would only be open if eqgame.exe was running), so even if they process scanned you while you *weren't* connected via the client, the firewall is just going to allow the request b/c it's on an opened port already, or at least a port that's designated to receive traffic from that specific address.

So, if you need tech support, unplug your lan cable or just tell them that you use a dial up and that you need it to talk to them on the phone. Otherwise, if you request it via the online chat or by /petition or whatever, then you'd better unload MQ first and spam up your window.

Additionally, process scans don't show you everything that's installed on the computer, it shows the active processes. So, if you just don't have MQ running, they won't know about it.

This leads to another point...if you do have it installed but are not running it, and they connect and tell you you're banned/suspended because you're using 3rd party software, then you (again) have good rights to sue the pants offa them, because they can't legally check your file contents for any folder outside the EQ ones. Additionally, and without a trojan or login access to your computer, this is pretty easy to prevent anyway.

So that's that, lol. Love your firewalls, but not because they're going to prevent you from getting process scanned. :)
