verant~

Post by Chris » Wed Feb 12, 2003 9:33 pm

I just wanted to know exactly how against-policy this great program is. Is it acceptable if used for certain purposes or is it just completely illegal. I also was curious about their ability to detect that you are using the program. I have been camping a mob and I tried using the hunter program on some local mobs to try it out. It works fine but when I make it go after a named that isn't up it spams my screen. Will those ' There are no " around here ' messages show up on their log files because they show up on mine. I think thats pretty much it for now. Feel free to post any related info that I may have forgotten. lol

Thanks,
Chris

In a lawyer's eyes, it is perfectly legal to automate procedures you would perform anyway, according to the EULA, since gameplay itself is not being modified, merely automated.

In sony's eyes, who can ban anyone on a whim, it is totally lillegal and they will ban you in a heartbeat if you are caught.

OK well if my screen is getting spammed with that msg will a gm be able to pick up on that out of the blue or will someone have to rat me out? I just wanna know if they have some way of serching the server logs for any messages associated with Macroquest

nope... it is *rumored* that a GM can see the last 10 lines of text in your main chat window at any given time, but my macros spam the hell out of me with /echo's and i have been going stron over a year even doing very risky things and never been caught... but maybe I am lucky lol

If you'll take the time to read the forums here, you'll find that we think you should stop using MQ unless you're ready and willing to be banned for life.

If you can't make that distinction, then don't use MQ. It's that simple!

I grow tired of people posting here looking for us to say "yes, it's quite alright..you'll be fine...MQ is safe". It's not safe -- if you use it, you will quite possibly be banned for life -- use at your own risk.

I've had numerous accounts banned while using MQ and I filter out all Mq output so even if a GM does pull the last 10 lines from client there's no way to tell. There are other ways to tell if someone is using third party software and GM's check. Many times I've had GM's send me a tell out of the blue to see if I'm at the keyboard. If I don't reply the account gets suspended and/or banned. I've also had accounts get banned while I wasn't even running MQ. Was told via email it was for using third party software. Sinec I didn't have MQ active at the time the only way they could have known is a server check of past activity. So if you're wondering how safe it is to use MQ...it's NOT SAFE AT ALL. If you use it expect to be banned. Now that said, I've seen dozens of people use it and not get banned. I've used it myself for many months sometimes and not been banned. But the reason isn't because GM's can't detect it. They simply don't have the time or the energy to ban every MQ user. There are hundreds of people that use MQ and thousands of people that cheat in other ways. GM's simply can't ban them all nor do they strive to. Whether you get banned for using it is largely determined by the whim and mood of the GM that catches you.

this is totall bs... Verant has this feature called "Full Screen Mode" if you are using that feature when you play there is no way in hell you see if someone sends you a tell or not...

As long as that is a possible mode to play in, I regard it as supported by verant, and they have to take the consequenses of that themself.

It would be so unfair to punish someone for using a built in feature. I really cant see them banning for not answering tells because of what I just pointed out... but ohh guess they can ban for that or any other reason... however in a court of law it would be hard to prove that not answering tells equals running macros...

Just something to consider...

Well, if you are performing other actions that would require you to have EQ as the primary window, they consider you there enough to answer tells. Though, the post you quoted was either full of a lot of other crap, or he is the single most well known macroer at SOE...which I doubt.

I think EQMule is refering not to the ability to run EQ in a window, but rather the fact that you can choose to run EQ without chat windows, which I think is an interesting arguement... *adds to his excuse book*

This whole "A GM can read your chat logs from MQ spill thing" is pretty stupid. Does every /echo or screen print MQ makes actually send a packet to the server? If not have we found anywhere in code that takes a 'signal' packet to do a basic /report that is specificly forwarded to a GM by the server?

I would refuse to believe the first with all the SEQ people know about EQ packets and bet the second is far unlikely.

However if someone wants to report themself for AFK macroing and watch packets fly when the GM comes in and sends them a tell, you might have a chance to prove it happens. Considering the no-mistake banning policy that GMs make in-game though, they probably wont bother to check chat logs untill 3 weeks after the fact.

thread hijack on....

Why is it people think Sony has logs of everything that appears on your screen? Ok, forget the "everything" part and lets settle down just a tad, lets think about tells. Who here thinks every tell you get or send is on a sony log somewhere -- stand up. SIT DOWN, think about it. How much drive space would it take to log every tell anyone sent, and store it for several weeks. Holy shit folks, they really don't care that much to invest those sorts of resources.

What about logs of "<Dancing Dickbeaters> ks'd me, the server logs will prove it". Again, how much drive space would it take? Too much.

While I agree paranoia makes for a safer world, there are certain realities that people owe it to themselves to be aware of.

Sorry for the minor rant and thread jack. Please return to our previously agree'd upon subject: Use MacroQuest and prepare to be banned -- if you're not banned yet, consider it a bonus.

The /bug and the /petition commands send the 10 lines that are in the chat window...read the help on petition command (scroll up to the offensive language and type /petition) therefore it is *possible* that the entire queue of text can be pulled by a GM...more than likely though, the petition sends a screenshot of the chat window to the GM's for review. Either way, ss or text queue, information in the chat window can be aquired by verant. If you do a /who and *anon* or *rp* people show up, or if you are looking for npc's and a [35 ogre warrior] Lord Crush (23.1NNW) shows up, You can get banned.

By Law, Verant CAN NOT get any information from your computer--meaning if you have MQ running as a process, Verant can not use that as an excuse to ban you. HOWEVER they can make a "bug" in their software that will not allow everquest to run when a process with "micro" in the title is running. So the worry about the test server MQ detector is a little off base...the detector will not allow them to ban your account..just make it where you can't run their game.

Yes thats exactly what I was trying to argue... and for thoose of you that want to try this press F10 when you are in game and you will know what Im talking about... F10 will put you in what I call "Full Screen Mode" i.e no other windows are showed on screen, you only see the world... no matter if you are in "Windowed Mode" or the other so called "Full Screen Mode" this will work and makes a valid argument for not seing tells and so on... someone would have to come up to you and wave in order for you to see they wants your attention...

@EqMule: The GMs are aware of what you can do with the F10 key. They won't ban you for just not answering a /tell. Now if they actually showed up in front of you, waved in your face, cast a spell on you, and you continued to repeat whatever you were doing. (proving you were AFK), Then yeah, your dumbass would get banned.
