Any tips for learning to program?

All forums need a place for all the posts for people in the community to rant about things not relating to what the forum is about. This is that forum.

Any tips for learning to program?

Post by Draimen » Thu Jul 01, 2004 5:15 pm

I have always been into computers but more into hardware and have worked in the IT field for a few years. I would like to get into software more, mainly programming. Can any of you guys recommend good books, tips, whatever for a newbie programmer?

I bought Deitel's "C++ How To Program" 4th edition and C++ for Dummies hehe. The Deitel book is nice. I have also considered taking classes, maybe even enrolling in ITT Tech's software engineering program. Assuming I want to make a career outa this, should I go to school for it? All of my computer knowledge is self taught and I am very confident I can teach myself cpp.

Should I even bother? I have heard of alot of unemployed software engineers. Anyway, any tips, readings, and info you can give me would rock.

Thanks.

I would be very cautious about that tradeschool. Any school that has trouble getting it's courses to be recognized and the credits accepted at other colleges just doesn't sit right with me. I for one want to be able to transfer any credits I earn to other schools if need be.

Check out your local community college, many have programming courses.

If you want to learn to program, the best way is to program. After about twenty years of it you'll start to get good.
