leading # in mob names

Who puts those there? Macroquest or EQ? In many zones this is a great way to find which named are up (/who npc #) but there are other spawns I'm interested in that don't have #. I did a few searches through the src code as well as on this site and didn't turn anything up. Is there a magic spawn list somewhere or should I look into a Plugin like MQ2SpawnAlert?

EQ does... generally its named, or other important mobs, but not always. and not all named have em.

The # basically means the spawn is unique. For example, if a mob was called #Froglok_King00, then there could be only one up at a time. Instead, if the mob is named Froglok_King00, then there could be several of those up at a time
Truth or Lies?

What I had heard was that if a guide/GM sees a mob with a # in front of the name they aren't allowed to use their magicial powers on it. I guess this would really only apply to guides. Anyway, its hard to say if thats made up but thats what I read back in the day when I used to SEQ over at the SEQ boards.

Mobs with # in front generally have a special loot table (ie, not a standard set of drops that you would get off an equivalent normal mob). So in ToV the standard drakes dont have a #, but the ones in HoT that drop symbols do, as do all the named dragons.
In Kael, you see a lot of mobs with # in front, normally the storm giants around the bank and arena, as well as tormax, status, vindicator, etc. The seemingly normal ones with the # drop the thurg quest armor and are therefore on a special loot table.
This is generally true for zones pre-GoD. I cant speak for GoD zones because i havent been there, but i am sure someone call fill us in on whether the naming convention with # remains the same in GoD also.

I am also leaning toward the special loot table theory as well. When I was hunting shards all the mobs that had a chance to drop a shard had a # in front of their names.

Or quest mobs that may despawn or respawn. THere are several in Vah Shar and one in PoK. And they arent on any special loot table.
There more likely to be mobs that can be spawned or despawned through quests or "rare" mobs from PH's. Just not always a mob with a "special loot" table.

I've noticed that in the LDoN and later zones expansions, # almost always denotes named. BY 'named', I mean unique mobs. I think it'd be safe to say that # guarantees that no other mob with the same name will exist.
On a side note, it's possible that if you see #SOME_MOB and SOME_MOB up at the same time, they are actually 2 separate mobs, and may be a hack some SOE people used to limit the loot table. For example, you see #orc_pawn in GFay. It's possible that this guy drops a rare loot item, different than the other orc pawns in GFay .I believe there is 1 orc pawn in gfay used for the ranger/druid epic that spawns at a given loc.. and only that orc can drop the item. This could be an easy way of facilitating such a situation, although I'm not sure if that's how they actually do it.
What I have noticed is that, post-LDoN (possibly even post POP), every named mob I've seen has had a #. In GoD, there are Turepta Cragwalkers, and then there's #A Fierce Cragwalker. It's similar with other animals there. Named in LDoN's all have a #.
I vaguely remember farming rare drops in a zone, and being able to easily determine which mobs would have the drop because they had a #... but I don't remember which zone or what I was looking for... it may have been during the anniversary scavenger hunt quest, but I'm not sure.
I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has seen a named mob post-POP without a #.

That orc doesn't drop anything for the druid/ranger epics, it causes an NPC to spawn that you need for the epic. Close though.

Yeah, I have seen that before. In my experience, the # drops loot while the mob without does not.

Sludge Eating Fly in "snlair" does not have a #.

All BST pet's are also #Toon's_Warder. I guess that goes with the only 1 at a time can be spawned whereas Jabobber04 for a mage pet would be the fourth Jabobber pet in the zone maybe? I have only seen them as Jabobber00 but bst pets are the only ones I have seen with the #.
