Error: Could not load MQ2Main.dll... again =/

I looked all over to see if this question was answered before but anyway here goes...
What does MQ2Auth really use to see the uniqueness of your computer? And would it be possible to make it to be more tolerant?
I have compiled MacroQuest two different times for this computer alone. One day I munged my XP install that I had to reload the OS. MQ no more workie.
Re-registered for VS Online Trial (Yes I own Visual Studio, but its VS _5_, not 6 or .net), uploaded the new mq2auth header file, compiled, had fun with Macroquest for a few hours. Well, I decided it was about time to patch my swiss cheese, so I installed XP Service Pack 1. Now I am again no longer authorized. Both the old compile and the newer compile don't work.
Again, I'm just wondering what the MQAuth really is? Is it kernel offsets generated for your Windows install, checksums of system files, etc? If it is __only__ for preventing every l4m3r in the world from downloading a zip file with a working binary, could it perhaps do something more along the lines of MAC address, hard drive S/N, etc?
<lame joke>Then again, my real motive is that I am tired of signing up for spam-me hotmail accounts</lame joke>
