Different Levels of Access

An idea i had for here that i think might work, would be something like they have over at FH. I'm talking about different levels of access. I do not think this sort of system would be necessary now, but if /click were to ever get working again, and the devs didn't want noobs abusing it. This would be a good system to help avoid that. It was just a thought i had, I don't care either way what happens tho.

Unless you did it cleverly, you would run into GPL issues with this.

So? Remove the GPL license from the project. /shrug

GPL

You can't just remove GPL from a project. You could start fresh with new source or not GPL indipendent pieces of code but anything built on exsisting GPL'd code would have to stay that way.

Why? Are you going to take us to court? Hell, if Sony could figure out how to do that, they'd already have done it ..heheheh

Yea, worrying about GPL on an illegal project seems rather silly. The original lead dev is gone, and doesn't seem concerned about it. BESIDES, all I'd have to do is create /click functionality as a library file (precompiled) and then sell that as a 3rd party addon...thus, negating any problems in the first place.

Different access levels would just create the same kind of secrecy and, frankly, jealousy as they have at F-H. It doesn't encourage the free exchange of ideas which makes this project fun to work on.

What you'd end up with is people hording code and macros in an attempt to break into the next higher level instead of sharing in an attempt to make things better for others.

Think you get flamed now asking for help? What happens when a newb asks for help, only to be told "that is higher level stuff, figure it out for yourself"? And who would ever tell him if he's right, wrong, or on the wrong track entirely?

Leave things the way they are, out in the open.

I agree Mckorr ... I just have to say that a part of me as well hates the thought of every idiot having access to /click causing us (with half a brain) more trouble.

Although, not releasing binary files is a good step.

Different levels of access suck.. it's either an open project, or it's not..

And yes, I'm aware there's a forum the 'plebians' don't see on here already.

open source project is usually a good thing, encourages more thought and exchange of ideas.

however in this case, it also works against you, severely.

I dont think its a coencidence that the structs keep getting scrambled on patch now, not much you can do about that but if I had to guess I'd say they prob wrote somekind of preprocessor script that just randomly reorders struct fields (thats how I'd do it). Nothing anyone here can do about this now though as the project depends heavily on those structs but this type of thing is just an example of how sony can get ahold of the mq source and look for ways to *significantly* inconvience you each patch if they choose to do so.

I dont know what the right answer is, access levels def isnt it, at F-H the access levels mean nothing, some of the stupidest people are in the highest level and some really smart people are in the low levels and just rarely post. Plus any sony programmer could come along and easily pretend to be someone else and worm his way into your inner circle.

just an fyi, macroquest is not illeagal to the best of my understanding on the subject, it is a violation of sony's EULA which means they can ban you for using it and at worst they could take you to civil court to claim the program caused them loss of revenue. I do not believe there is any basis for criminal charges though.

ap50... yeah, there's a dev only forum, but most of what goes on there has solely to do with the direction of MQ, not with added code, extra functions, etc. There's no secret /click code, no uber plat macros. It's administrative stuff.

lol I probably post there more than most of the other devs, and it's usually me begging for help after I've been banging my head on the keyboard over some code I don't understand.

Edit: Oh, yeah, and there's a lot of DKAA yelling at me to use the CVS in there too. :P

Was just a thought =)

I'm using the CVS already! Just get tired of pasting back in my changes so I can continue to bang my head against the keyboard over code I know SHOULD work, but doesn't.

What kind of loser gives up like that? :-)
