SOE Beware

So, we seeing any new client-side code or ya think it's server-side/behavior-based detection -- or just the standard saber rattling saying "Ya all you that have whined, by sending out this MOTD, and for all the bozos that click on the link and we log and triangulate your IP, we'll send a GM to stand next to you for a little while periodically and watch you."

Thoughts?

The link is to a standard Forum at SOE. You can access it from the "news" at eqplayers, or Forums - community news. I don't think they will track your IP.

If you read the forum, it "appears" they are talking more about the ghosting, warping and other active hacks. IT will not include magelo and other "item info tacking" or tools that read your log files. It also seems that programical keyboards are OK. Active hacks include things that "normal players" can't do such as ghost killing, warping. It doesn't specifically say MQ2 or what parts of it are illegal.

They specifically said a couple times something similar to this exact quote from a SOE employee

An extremely good rule of thumb for dealing with "grey areas" would be the following:

If I perform action X or use program Y, does the end result allow me to do something that my character would ordinarily NOT be able to do in game?

If the answer is YES, then it's cheating and you shouldn't do it. That answers almost every example you listed above. Boxing is NOT an exploit, and boxing is NOT cheating.

The question is I don't box a tracker, yet I can use the mqmap and see namers and if any NPCs or PC are near it, something that rangers can't do.
