The MQ crowd is elitist. With ShowEQ, you had to have a bit of knowledge to set up a unix system, get your libraries, etc etc.. Those requirements thinned out the herd by themselves. Our devs here only require a compiler which means any idiot that buys VC or higher off ebay can participate which in turn means there's a high possibility of some jackoff bringing undue attention to our little soiree.
It was even rumored, at one point, that SOE would leave the devs (and therefore us) alone as long as the devs didn't release the offsets for a couple weeks after a new expansion was released. (Anyone? Velious era I believe?)
Anyway, MQ's code might be open source but the knowledge is only shared if the requestee shows some level of maturity and self reliance.
