There was a change made also that would affect this if you weren't paying attention... The 5 "guy" npc's are invisible mobs. MQ was changed a week or so ago to not show invis mobs by default.
Change your search to /who npc guy invis
Alternatively, use the whoinvis filter to turn it back on by default.

Anyone know if this no longer works?
Last night after a server crash.. while we were doing the Earth rings, I was trying to /who npc guy invis and would get no matches.
Was I doing something wrong?

No, it means it's working perfectly. You said the server crashed. When the server crashes, or zone crashes, all poe ring events are "reset", meaning they're all up and ready to be run again. The invis guy won't show up until after you've completed the event.
