Question of the Experts

Post by Sawmantha » Wed Aug 10, 2005 10:51 am

I figure this is where the people with the most knowledge of EQ gather so it would be a good source to answer this question.

Is there anyway to monitor chat channels that you are not in or tells between 2 characters where you are not one of those characters? I have been told that a "Big Brother" tool exists that allows this type of functionality.

I doubt it, but prior to spending time reading here I doubted a lot of things that I know are very true.

thanks

If you are a GM.

GM's can do it because they have direct server access so they can monitor all channels...You would have to sniff packets going to and from the computer you want to spy on I think...

Simple fact is they could very well monitor with a "Big Brother Tool" and no way for us to know.

Thanks guys.

That is what I thought. I have a guild member that is paranoid because a guild leader called him on the carpet for something said in a chat channel that the leader was not in. My first thought was loose lips by one of the participants. The leader stated that he new because of an "SoE secret way".

I figured the leader was messing with him but thought I would verify it with the experts.

FYI: The leader has never been a GM.

My thoughts are that if you have such a tool, you would not be broadcasting it to the world. So unless there is proof otherwise, your guild leader is a dumbass.

My money's on your guild leader being a dumbass as well. Either that or friends with a GM, which I suppose is possible.

I don't beleive SOE logs chat for very long though (in fact, IIRC, they never used to log anything chat-wise), as the sheer amount of storage space required to hold onto every snippet of chat that goes through SOE's servers every day would choke the San Diego are with server farms I'd wager.

Social engineering, most likely. Someone with loose lips, and the GL is trying to make himself appear omniscient with "sekrit SOE ackcess".
