um this may sound silly but can we make this a sticky topic. Also if anyone does this or trys at getting this to work can you please post the results on how well it worked for you. Any bugs or difficulties you ran across. I am an avid admirer of linux only good enough to install by hand and get on the net without X. I personally find X as an easy way to try and learn linux so Have little X windows experience. But if this truly works as well as it sounds I may be doing a sytem format and going straight. Linux (debian if i get the courage). Only major downside I see so far is I dont think macroquest has been ported to *.nix yet unless WineX will run it also...

Any and all input is much apprecieated if you dont feel like posting please PM it to me..

Thanks
Madman

So what did you think of it? did it work well enough to experiment with?

EQ in WineX

Post by brinx » Tue Mar 11, 2003 3:26 pm

It works great. However, since it's not true DirectX it runs a little slower on my box than on Windows. (XP/2000)

I think it's great, however there are a few minor things that are in the works :

Weird in-game font. The font in chatboxes is generally larger, also the PC/NPC names and guildtags are in Sensei Penguin italics and the letters are very close together.

Using EverQuest's native windowed mode also causes the game to crash.

Changing the resolution while playing (ie. past Server Select) will cause a major graphic bug. (All white objects with no textures)

When writing to your linux partitions from in game, ie. updating your /friend list, or writing a /note, causes a slight halt in gameplay (like .5s).

Other than that, it's pretty damn flawless imo.

I haven't yet figured out how to release the mouse in WineX's "Managed" mode from EQ.

My System specs :
Redhat Linux 8.0 Kernel 2.4.18-24.8.0
Nvidia GeForce4 TI 4600
NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191
NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191
AMD Athlon 1500
512MB SDRAM

That's all that is important I think, if you have any questions feel free to ask.

[Edit]My lord, I just noticed when this was first posted. LMAO

Works fine here.. Just slightly slower than native.

Specs:
Gentoo 1.4rc2 (sync'd t o current)
emerge of (masked) winex-cvs (WineX 2.2.1)
Kernel 2.4.20
NVidia latest kernel and GLX drivers.

Btw, I run it under KDE 3.1. Run it in non-windowed mode (eqclient.ini setting), uncomment "Desktop" in your wine config file and set it to your eq resolution, and (if you want your mouse) set DXGrab to "N". Bingo, EQ in a windoe under linux.

To switch out.. Alt-tab and hold it, then move your mouse out of the EQ window then let go of alt-tab. Works great.

Btw, if you are not using Gentoo (www.gentoo.org) I would suggest switching. It has a ports collection like Open/NetBSD. It's wonderful.

Buy the Xbox if you want the best looking and most hackable.
Xbox it is. Gee that was a hard decision.

Maybe it's time to unsticky this? It got me all excited when I saw the headline. It doesn't work anymore.
