EQ2 MQ... How long will it take?

Post by theafkxper » Mon Feb 02, 2004 7:41 pm

With the EQ2 Beta coming soon (at least i expect it to, as they dont want to be far behind WoW) i started thinking, How long will it take for the geniouses here at MQ to get an EQ2 version going? Or even if The current devs plan on developing for MQ2?

My guess is something will be working with very limited functionality within a month and a half of release (maybe sooner if Alphas/Betas are leaked and we get a sneak peak)

You're missing an option in your poll..
Option 6: - who gives a fuck - EQ1 forever.

I wouldnt expect EQ2 any time soon. From what I hear it doesnt really exist yet. The demos that have been seen are just that.. Mock ups that look pretty.

I would expect a major revamp of the EQ1 graphics engine (EQ1.5) before we see anything of EQ2.

From what little reading I've done the new EQ1 graphics engine is due out around April. EQ2 should follow it by a couple months.

In other words they want to work out the bug/patch issues with the new engine by testing it on EQ1, before they use it on EQ2. A lot of the changes you see to EQ1 these days appear to be alpha testing for EQ2.

All i know is I love seeing theafkxper and ap50 avatars back to back in a post... doesn't even matter what the post is about after seeing that. You could say the world is coming to an end and it's all good with those avatars staring back at ya. :P

Sorry for the derail... but had to say it.

lol sniper...

@ Mkorr- yeah, i would normally agree, but i think in this situation, with WoW and EQ2 being the two most anticipated MMO's in a long time (possibly all time), i highly doubt EQ2 will let itself slip much behind WoW in the production cycle, even if it means shipping us a less than finished product.

In any event, both companies know that whoever releases their game first will get the "tweeners" who havent decided which they would prefer playing.

EQ2 has some big things going against it, including:

* It's made by SOE (have you looked at SWG?..omfg!)
* They blew up the fucking moon! (I'm so vexed about that..I LIKED luclin!)
* They made Freeport even bigger (Hideous fucking town in EQ1 -- I can't believe they're going to make it more important!!)

Seriously though, people go on and on about how that SWG and EQ2 are not sharing technology or whatever. However, I've seen the EQ2 screenshots and it's so much like SWG it's not even funny...and everything they describe about the database system makes me think that they'll use the same screwed up Oracle database backend that SWG uses that is a big damn mess.

Now..on the flip side, WoW has it's own problems too:
* The hype is WAY TOO BIG! The game can never live up to it when it goes live and that's going to make it look worse.

I say we don't worry about it and enjoy EQ live while we still can. If either game is worth the effort, then someone will make a ShowEQ or MQ type program for the game...but, I don't think anyone is going to go through the trouble until they see some long term things going on.

However, I personally am not completely opposed to moving my money to a new game, if it's good enough. But, I don't think I'll play both.

Let me say again... EQ2 does not exist. The screenshots are rendered. The demo was a mock up with prerendered backgrounds.

All work has been flat out on making changes to the EQ engine.

When I first heard this I didnt really believe it. Why would they continue with all the EQ2 Media hype, but this comes from a lead GM source.

Personally I'd like to see a new engine in EQ. Bloody well might start using my Graphics card properly.... Maybe.

They could use the EQ 1.5 graphics engine, or a slight upgrade of it. Once they have the graphics engine taken care of, most of the game logic could easily be stolen from EQ 1. Paste a new skin on EQ1 and change a few features. They could even re use a lot of the item names and zone structures because its the same world. They could probably make up a system for alpha testing fairly damn easily if they havent already. Also, regardless of whether they have a working eq2 or not right now, they have been working on it for a LONG time. Everyone remember that hacker from(2001 maybe) who hacked into the lead dev's computer and it was reported that he stole eq2 secrets? they didnt just think up eq2.
