Since Nvidia released a driver for the 5900 (and I guess other cards too) I installed Windows XP 64 bit edition for 64-bit extended systems on my AMD64, compiled a version of MQ for it. Loaded up MQ and it works fine. Since XP64 uses a WOW (windows on windows) sort'ta like win9x does for old 16 bit but this is for 32 bit programs wasn't sure if the OS tried to keep things from talking to each other. But it all seems to work fine FYI.

So you were able to get EQ to run on your 64 system then? My buddy and I tryed everything we could think of to get EQ working on his AMD64 system over christmass break to no avail. We would get to the loading screen then we would get a popup error saying EQ crashed. We called SoE cust support and they told us that EQ does not support 64 bit systems and we were on our own.

I haven't done any real research on 64-bit computing, but I was under the impression that 32-bit applications were 100% compatible with the new 64-bit processors and operating systems. I had assumed that upgrading now to a 64-bit environment would just prepare for future software while still supporting the older stuff perfectly.
I guess I was wrong?

It works fine with all your drivers updated at least for me it does.
the AMD 64 was designed to be backwards 'compatible', the Intel one has a few issues.
There are a few things that I've ran across that just don't work for me (installers seem to be the biggest)

is 32bit support a hardware level support or sofware level support? It sounds like hardware support because you are talking about difference between the AMD64 and the Intel one...

Hardware, its the processors that are (trying to be) backward compatible.
