MQ2 Bug: Very bad lag when 3+ mobs are on the screen

Post by Rage » Wed Nov 19, 2003 7:10 pm

When running MQ2, my FPS is around 30-40 (normal) when idle, fighting 1-2 mobs it's at a normal 30 FPS. Once a third mob enters the screen, FPS drops to 20. Once a fourth mob enters the screen, FPS drops to 10.

I have stopped using MQ2 because of this framerate lag/bug as it hinders my hunting abilities and survival rate as a swarmkiting bard :(

When using MQ1, I have no problems concerning framerate during battles.

I hate to break this to you, but MQ2FPS isn't dropping your FPS... EQ is. MQ2FPS is displaying it. The only reason you're not concerned in MQ1 is it's not being displayed!

I noticed that unless you manually set it the first time you run MQ2, it doesnt seem to work, but as soon as I set /maxfps bg 5
I have a smooth machine... I think it needs to initialize or something... or just create the inifile perhaps... anyway it work just fine. its an awesome feature, running eq without it then loading MQ2 is like going into a gasstation getting a slurpy when its 105 degrees outside.

The default is 50/30 and MQ2FPS calculates so that its not going to oversleep in order to achieve the requested FPS... so...

I think you misunderstood what I meant...

in both MQ1 and MQ2, my foreground FPS is limited to 100, and my background FPS is limited to 20

I have a decent computer/connection:
AMD Athlon 1.0ghz
512mb PC2100 DDR ram
GeForce4 MX420 64mb AGP
RoadRunner Cable Modem

For testing purposes I have switched to low graphic texture quality, mipmapping off, texture compression on, social animations off, texture caching on.

EQW is being used, as I have no problems with running EQW instead of a naked EQ client.

HERE IS THE PROBLEM:
I am swarmkiting nightstalkers in PoN and everything is fine with no MacroQuest.

Everything is fine when running MQ1.

Framerate drops when a third monster enters the screen while using MQ2.

Framerate mysteriously returns to normal when no more than TWO monsters are on screen.

The framerate difference is TREMENDOUS. Movement and rotation is extremely choppy when several (5+) mobs are on screen, using MQ2.

This problem, again, does not occur when using MQ1 or a naked EQ client.

---------------------------------

The mq2fps plugin helped me determine what my exact framerate numbers were, and the lag was occuring with AND without most of the plugins loaded. The only plugin I didn't turn off in the test was mq2chtwnd.

---------------------------------

I hope this post provides more information for the bug I experienced

Well, here's the problem.. nothing inside MQ1 or MQ2 is counting the visible mobs... and the FPS limiter doesn't care if there are mobs on the screen or not... I'll check on it right now though...

Yeah so what I'm really saying I guess is I'm noticing a lag problem while using MQ2 that I don't in MQ1 when multiple mobs are on the screen and I'm just using mq2fps plugin to get exact FPS numbers

Well, I'm running 9 plugins. My computer is decidedly much more powerful than yours (Athlon XP 1800+, 1GB DDR, GeForce ti4200). I have my max fps set to 50. Run around randomly in PoN, 50fps. Pull all nightstalkers, 27 fps. FPS drops by putting more things on the screen no matter what. Are you actually NOTICING and FEELING the difference, or are you just reporting the numbers you're seeing? With your system I would pretty much expect those results?

Ok. someone made a suggestion that it could be debugspew. Updating MQ2 zip shortly with modified debugspew...

yea on my win2k machine (i attribute this to a slower harddisk) i have always noticed severe drops in gfx performance when i enable debugspew to log and debug reproducable crashes with mq

i think its definitely related, because more mobs you have in range (highly likely they are in view because your trying to kill them) your logging more activities of you vs mobs with the attached process spew

Nah it's really only if hes running a macro at the time. When not running macros you get very little debug spew. When running macros you would have gotten plenty. Anyway, newest zip would solve the problem if this is it.

Concerning the lag bug, it has been fixed in MQ2 within the last few/several days. Thanks a lot Lax!
