Well, VS 6.0 is kind of outdated, I'm not sure if MS still produces it. As much as many people hate the .NET framework, it defintely has some nice features. If you are a college or high school student with an ID, you can go to your local college bookstore and get VS.NET Academic for 99.99USD. Ebay also is a place to search... Definitely worth 99.99. As for 6.0 being bought, I'm not sure, but 599.99 seems to be kinda pricey. If you go with Enterprise it may be that high, but for just a single license I'd be willing to be it'd be more around 299.99 at the most... You can also just look for Visual C++ 6.0... You don't really need the studio, just a microsoft c++ compiler for all those ghetto libraries that aren't ansi c compliant :).
Good luck on your search, and I hope whoever offered you a compiled exe's hard drive locks up tonight. If the devs wanted to add an executable to the zip, it would be done. NEVER trust random people's executables, people love to play with other people's hard drives. It is harmless unless you do any online banking, or auctions, then it becomes very risky, and can ruin one's credit (unless you have that capital one no hassle card that the orcs come to kill the guy until they find out he has that card, i love that commercial for some reason...)
Peace.
