Everquest under Vmware?

Post by Amadeus » Fri Jul 12, 2002 3:13 am

Is it possible to "trick" EQ into running under Vmware running on a Linux box? (ie, virtual windows 98 ).

If you've never used vmware, this question will probably make no sense whatsoever

not 100% sure whether it just uses a "generic" graphics driver or not. if it does, then u will prolly be stuffed.

I doubt it would be even playable tho, due to EQs system requirements.

y do u want to do this - aIm assuming u want to run showeq on your linux box? Y not do it the other way round and have EQW running on a windows box with showeq running in a vmware... showeq will have much less hw requirements!

or...go and buy a cheap old pentium pc - that will be good enough to run showeq...should only cost couple of hundred bucks for PC, monitor etc... probably about same price as copy of VMware...

Salutations,
I know that EQ doesn't run under WineX, WineX doesn't support all the Dx8 stuff it uses...

I will have to answer no to this.

VMWare does not use actualy drivers for anything. It uses generic drivers for everything and this can not be changed. Hell if I remeber correctly most the drivers aren't even drivers at all just weird VMware code that ties into your current systems drivers to be proccessed in VMWare (does that even make sense?)

As for now there is no way to get linux up and running under linux. Closest I or anyone else has been able to get it up to the patching of the system which it does fine. Only way I see this ever happening is when/if WineX/Transgaming ports it over to Linux.

Why not just run Linux under VMWare on a Windows box?

You've missed the point of my original post.

I need to run EQ under Linux (ie, under vmware) because my second PC is a linux computer.

...hehe, amazing how the original question/point gets lost throughout a thread

It didnt work m8 - no 3d card capable of running EQ.

If you need to play EQ on 2 PCs, remove Linux from it, install Windows & if u really need to have Linux, then have a linux VM installed! I still dont understand why anyone would want Linux though - you cant run EQ on it...

There ya go - thread answered.

Actually, the biggest problem is the people that only read the LAST post in a thread before responding.

This thread is a perfect example. If you start with the first posting (which I made) you'll see that almost every response reads as though the person responding only read the last posting ;)

the problem is not because i only read your first and last post, its because i didn't read every thing in between :)
